SEO Tips

You may have a beautiful website that looks great and has a lot to offer. This is a great start, however it’s no good if your customers can’t find it. A lot of factors must be taken into consideration to get to the top of google such as your websites written content, how many competitors you have, and the budget you are willing to spend to get there. Below are some useful tips to make sure your website is SEO (search engine optimisation) friendly. This is the first step to improving your websites search engine performance.

1. Keywords and H tags

First of all, have a think about the keywords your potential customers will be searching for to find you and make sure they appear a lot in your websites content. If you can include your keywords in heading tags this is even better! Try to be consistent with your heading tags, google prefers only one <h1> per page, followed by several <h2> – <h6> tags.

2. Meta info

Make sure you enter in your meta information between your websites <head></head> tags and include as many keywords as you can. The most common tags used are: <meta name=”description” content=”…” />This gives google a brief description of your website and should be no longer than 135 – 160 characters long.<meta name=”keywords” content=”..” />

Enter in all your keywords here, each separated with a comma. Remember not to over-do it with the keywords as google will see this as a negative. Don’t repeat yourself too much and try to keep it simple.

Enter the title of your website in here. Try to include your main keyword and keep it below 60 characters.

3. Image alt and title Tags

Google reads text, not images, so ensure all your images contain alt and title tags. If any are missing, this will have a negative effect on your websites overall SEO score.

4. Keep a Blog / Newsfeed

Google loves fresh, new content. Keep a blog / newsfeed on your website and try to write at least one article every month or two. Keep your topics interesting and try to avoid sales tactics. An article teaching readers the importance of fruit and vegetables in their diet, as opposed to an article trying to sell fruit and vegetables is more likely to be picked up by google. Keep your articles relevant to your business and share them across social media.

5. Reduce image sizes

Google loves fast loading websites, and so do customers! No one wants to sit waiting for something to load, and your potential customer is more than likely going to turn back if this happens. One of the easiest ways to reduce load time is to keep your images as small as possible. Re-size them to the size they need to be and no bigger. When saving as a .jpg file, use the lowest quality setting you can before your image starts to lose quality. Another useful tip is to use a site called TinyPNG to reduce images sizes even more.

6. Unique content

One of the most important rules of SEO is to not copy content. Thing of google as a teacher scoring your work, if you copy from someone else you’re going to get a bad SEO score. Make sure all the content in your website is written fresh, contains a consistent amount of keywords, and has good spelling and grammar.

7. Mobile site

We live in a modern time, and a high percentage of customers browse the web on their phones. By ensuring your website is screen responsive you are creating a better experience for your customers, as well as gaining extra SEO points.

8. Social Media

Everyone is on social media! The main ones used are LinkedIn, Facebook, Google and Instagram. It’s important for your business to have a strong presence on the web, with lots of posts linking people to your website. Facebook has some great marketing tools to utilise and you are likely to reach more potential customers here than anywhere else.

9. Google maps

Add your business details to google maps so customers can find you easily whilst improving your SEO score at the same time. This is quick and easy to do. Visit google https://www.google.co.uk/business/, click start now and follow the easy instructions to continue. All you will need is a Gmail account. Once you’ve confirmed all your details, google will send you a postcard with a unique code to enter to verify your details.

10. Keep on top of it

As mentioned before, it’s important to keep fresh and interesting content on your website and keep things up to date. Writing blog posts, updating content and keeping up to date on social media can be time consuming and a full time job.
